This 2015 Article Shows Just How Much Meghan Markle\'s Life Has Changed

is living a fairy tale right now. The Suits actress is engaged to Prince Harry, which means so many exciting events are on the horizon for her—mainly, erm, a royal wedding. Based on recent interviews, though, it seems like Markle was quite content with her life before meeting Prince Harry. She was on a hit TV show, after all, and she enjoyed a tranquil existence in Los Angeles largely out of the spotlight.

But there was one point in Markle's life where she was unhappy. Long before Prince Harry—and even Suits—Markle was a struggling aspiring actress in her early twenties who didn't even have enough money to fix her broken car doors. (No joke, she entered through her trunk to get to the driver's seat.)

It's a time in her life she outlines in this 2015 essay from >Darling magazine that we recently unearthed. Markle gets surprisingly candid in the piece, revealing her darkest moments from her younger years—and the times she felt like giving up. She recalls the audition process back then being "unapologetically impossible" and noted that she spent many evenings "eating [her] feelings with grilled cheese sandwiches and cheap wine."

"I was in my early twenties, still figuring so much out, and trying to find my value in an industry that judges you on everything that you’re not versus everything that you are," she wrote. "Not thin enough, not pretty enough, not ethnic enough, while also being too thin, too ethnic, too pretty the very next day."

Her attitude transformed instantly, however, when a casting director finally told her something she needed to hear: that she was enough. "I was breathless. No one had ever seen it, or perhaps no one had ever called me out, but there in that small box of a room in Burbank, this woman I had never met saw me," she wrote.

With this new mind-set, Markle's career took off. She landed the role of Rachel on Suits, which she had for seven years before leaving to become the next literal duchess of England. Her journey from then to now is drastic, but it's inspiring and sends an important message: When we realize our own self-worth, everything can change.
