Robert Cohen of Cohen Medical Centers will be in Mesquite on Saturday (Jan. 21) to conduct evaluations for medical marijuana patients.
The evaluations will be from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., by appointment only, inside the Sunset Mesa Room of the Holiday Inn Express, located at 1030 W. Pioneer Blvd. The cost is $225, which covers all required state fees.
Cohen Medical Centers has been in business since 2009, offering evaluations to patients in Colorado and Nevada who are interested in medical cannabis as a health option
"We help with the entire process: The doctor visit, notary, and all state paperwork with electronic filing," Cohen said.
Ahead of Saturday's visit to Mesquite, Cohen took part in a question-and-answer session with the Desert Valley Times:
What kind of ailments qualify me for medical marijuana?
The state recognizes nine conditions: Cancer, glaucoma, post-traumatic stress disorder, severe pain, severe nausea, chronic weight loss, persistent muscle spasms, HIV/AIDS, and seizures. Cannabis can help with many more but the doctor can only use the above conditions to qualify a patient.
What is medical marijuana an alternative for? How can medical marijuana help me?
Many people find that cannabis makes the medicine they use work better. Many pain patients see dosage lessen quickly.
What does a medical marijuana card allow me to do?
A doctor recommendation makes you legal. The card gets you access to the dispensary system. You can get 2.5 ounces or 10,000 mg alternative (concentrates, edibles and oils) every two weeks.
What does a medical marijuana card not allow me to do?
Have a concealed carry permit.
Are there restrictions as to where I can acquire medical marijuana?
You can go to any dispensary.
Could I grow my own medical marijuana?
Yes, under certain conditions. If you were growing prior to 2013, if you are more than 25 miles from a dispensary, if you can't travel to a dispensary due to illness or lack or transportation, or if you grow a strain you need for your care that is not available at a dispensary.
What does the evaluation entail?
The doctor takes a history and physical and determines if the patient qualifies for cannabis under the state program.
Why should I get a medical marijuana license when marijuana just became legal in Nevada?
Selection, protection, and price. The recreational cannabis will likely cost 25 percent more. Many medical products will not be available in the recreational side such as salves, oils, and suppositories.
If I don't qualify, do I get my money back?
