HOUSTON, TX — Houston's Discovery Green, has unveiled its Winter 2017–2018 programming schedule, filled with events and activities that offer Houstonians an array of exciting holiday traditions to share.
The Winter season runs from Nov. 18, to Feb. 25, 2018, features The ICE powered by Green Mountain Energy, film screenings, family-friendly programs and much more.
Most activities at Discovery Green are free thanks to contributions from park users, foundations and sponsors.
"Discovery Green has an exciting winter season in store, with daily skating events at the ice rink, weekly film screenings, an interactive art installation made just for the park and much more," said Barry Mandel, president of the Discovery Green Conservancy. "We hope these programs will bring moments of magic to visitors throughout the holidays and into the new year."
The season kicks off on Nov. 18 with Frostival, Discovery Green's annual park-wide celebration featuring ice carving, live music and interactive activities for the whole family.
Park visitors are invited to get into the spirit of the season with special events on The ICE, a holiday film series at Screen on the Green presented by Bank of America and a special edition of Winter Flea by Night presented by Green Mountain Energy, open weekly on Saturdays leading up to Christmas.
Discovery Green's first original art commission, Hello, Trees! A Walking Serenade by Daily tous les jours, will open on November 18, 2017.
In this interactive installation, visitors are invited to speak into input stations located at each end of the sculpture; their voices are translated into light patterns and musical melodies that travel along a series of arches under the live oak canopy, the park feature that inspired this one-of-a-kind piece.
Hello, Trees! will remain on view through Feb. 25, 2018.
The public is invited to an artist talk on Friday, November 17, 2017, at 6 p.m. on the Hess Deck. Additional programming is planned throughout the run of the installation.
