From Gender Fluidity To A Fur Free Future: Here\'s What We Can Expect From The Fashion Industry In 2018

2017 saw monumental change and many highlights for the fashion industry.

Edward Enninful became the first black man to take the helm of British Vogue, the original supermodels reunited for Versace and Dior's feminist T-shirts became a must-have fashion statement. It's fair to say - it was quite a year.

However, 2018 is already set to be even more eventful, as designers continue to chop and change, catwalk shows face a switch up - meanwhile, diversity, equality and animal rights continue to make progress.

In case you are already struggling to keep up - here are all the things we can expect from the fashion industry in 2018.

New Designers

>

2017 saw Christopher Bailey announce a surprise departure from Burberry after 17 years, Jonathan Saunders step down from Diane Von Furstenberg and Clare Waight Keller leave Chloé.

They're only a handful of the designers who are switching ventures in 2018. So, we can look forward to a few new movers and shakers, as well as a few more reinvented brands.

Fur-Free Fashion

>

The use of fur has been a controversial topic within the fashion industry for many years.

However, 2017 saw consumers become more educated about animal cruelty and substantiality, protests became a regular occurrence at Fashion Weeks worldwide and an increasing pressure on designers to shift to a cruelty-free alternative.

It seems their ongoing efforts have done the trick, as this year several luxury brands will no longer use animal fur in their products.

Gucci announced that it was going fur-free back in October - with Michael Kors and Jimmy Choo quickly following suit.

Many More Political Statements

>

Fashion became a powerful political tool in 2017.

Pink pussy hats helped to fight inequality at the Women's March. Meanwhile, Maria Grazia Chiuri's Dior tee which read “We Should All Be Feminists” became an important style staple.

Fashion also touched on the topics of Brexit, Donald Trump jeopardising Planned Parenthood and racial discrimination and we are sure they're just the beginning when it comes to 2018.

More Inclusivity

>

From racial, body and age diversity to gender fluidity, 2017 took big strides in the right direction for inclusivity.

Designers showcased models of all sizes, ages and ethnicity on the catwalks, with New York Fashion Week seeing one of their most diverse seasons to date.

>

Furthermore, Adwoa Aboah became the third ever black model to star on a British Vogue cover alone and won Model Of The Year. Meanwhile, Vivienne Westwood, Charles Jeffery Loverboy and Ashish blurred gender boundaries both on and off the catwalk.

So, we are certain that 2018 will only bring more positive change.

Co-Ed Shows

>

Further breaking down gender barriers, several luxury fashion houses are backing out of the traditional separate menswear and womenswear catwalk shows in order to create a more modern co-ed approach.

Following in the footsteps of Burberry, Coach, Calvin Klein, Gucci and Vivienne Westwood  - JW Anderson, Salvatore Ferragamo and Balenciaga are all going co-ed this year and we can't wait.

A Fashion Week Switch Up

>

Designer are changing their showcase strategy and therefore the Fashion Week schedules.

Anya Hindmarch will no longer show at London Fashion Week, instead implementing projects and events throughout the year which are more appropriate for consumers.

Anya will also join British brands Mulberry and Burberry in adopting the new 'see now, buy now' strategy.

However, other runway show departures are also taking place due to technological advances.

Vivienne Westwood is ditching her popular catwalk show in favour of a digital presentation as an ongoing bid to make her brand more environmentally conscious.

>

All is not lost though - Victoria Beckham has just announced that her eponymous fashion label will be joining the London Fashion Week line-up, for the first time ever.
