Can we carry a handgun while hunting in Iowa? There are some scary things out by where I hunt and need to know.
If you have a valid carry permit in the state of Iowa, you can carry a handgun while bowhunting. This rule was approved during the 2017 Iowa legislative session. Hunters, however, cannot use the handgun to take the deer during the Oct. 1-Dec. 1 part of the archery season.
I sure hope a lot of folks around here know what you do for vets and for kids battling cancer every year. Thank you for all your efforts. When is your annual wild dinner, and what’s on the menu?
There are a lot of folks who do way more than I do, but thanks for the mention. The annual Beast Feast that I host will be Jan. 19 at the Stoney Creek Inn in Johnston. We will have bear, moose, deer, wild turkey, wild boar and other lip-smacking proteins for everyone to try.
You can call the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society office for tickets at 515-270-6169. I started this event a long time ago in my father’s memory. He died of non-Hodgkin lymphoma at age 58.
I had a few deer blow at me while using my Ozonics this week. Do these work? I thought they stopped deer from smelling you. How do you get so close to those big bucks on your show?
They can work well, but if there are wind swirls or your thermals go down, deer can still detect you. I don’t believe there is anything you can do to stop 100 percent of your odor footprint in the woods, unless you’re fully contained in a hazmat suit. There are things you can do to dramatically reduce your scent, though.
First, always play the wind. Set up several stands so you have options for any wind. I also wash my clothes with a good, scent-free detergent, then treat them with an Enforcer ozone generator and store them in a scent-free tote or bag until I’m ready to hunt.
I always take a shower with a good scent elimination body soap before I hunt. Once I get to where I’m hunting, I also spray down my camo, boots and gear with a scent-eliminating spray.
Since I have done these things, I see way more deer than I used to and get busted by them way less.
